Product-Specific Comparisons
IBM Director is a feature-oriented suite of systems management utilities designed to provide all the
hardware management that is needed by an IT department. IBM Director is uniquely positioned to
operate in a variety of environments. As the sole systems management application in an environment,
IBM Director provides a total solution, complete with hardware features and settings, general system
information, proactive systems management capabilities, and a direct link to IBM service and support
Web pages. The extensible architecture provided by leveraging industry standards allows for easy
integration with other systems management tools and applications.
Competitive offerings from Compaq, Dell and Hewlett Packard cannot match the capabilities of IBM
Director. The following sections provide a brief outline of key differences between IBM Director and the
software provided by each of these hardware manufacturers. These differences are in addition to IBM
Director’s exclusive functions presented in the previous section.
Compaq Insight Manager 7
y IBM Director includes Capacity Manager, an integrated tool for server capacity and performance
analysis. Capacity Manager monitors server resources, identifies potential bottlenecks, makes
recommendations for fixing these bottlenecks to prevent downtime, and forecasts future server
performance. Plus, alerts can be generated if a server bottleneck is detected.
y IBM Director allows the configuration of RAID controllers on local and remote systems including
the expansion of logical drives and RAID level changes.
y IBM Director can perform drag and drop queries on the inventory database and generate a report
that can be exported. Queries can be run against single or multiple systems. With Insight
Manager reports cannot be run against multiple machines and you cannot export the data.
y IBM Director has robust alerting capabilities with over 20 possible actions generated by an alert.
Insight Manager 7 is only capable of sending a page, an e-mail, forwarding an alert or launching
an application.
y The Fuel Gauge utility monitors the redundancy and power consumption of the power supplies
and can present these values in table or chart form.
Hewlett Packard TopTools 5.5
y IBM Director has robust alerting capabilities with over 20 possible actions generated by an alert.
TopTools is capable only of sending a page or an e-mail, launching an application or writing to
the NT Event Log.
Dell OpenManage IT Assistant Version 6.2
y IBM Director includes Capacity Manager, an integrated tool for server capacity and performance
analysis. Capacity Manager monitors server resources, identifies potential bottlenecks, makes
recommendations for fixing these bottlenecks to prevent downtime, and forecasts future server
performance. Also, alerts can be generated if a server bottleneck is detected.
