14.2.3 VAX 7000 systems may not reboot or write the dump file
VAX 7000 systems using Host Based Volume Shadowing may display the following message
during booting:
"SHADOW-I-VOLPROC, DSAnnn does not contain member named to VMB, Warning system
may not reboot or dump".
If a bugcheck or forced crash occurs the system halts and a system dump is not written.
This problem only occurs if CSCPAT_0269021 (patch including SHDRIVER) is installed. Fix
is to obtain newer version of SHDRIVER from CSC.
14.2.4 DEC Verifier and Exerciser Tool (DEC VET)
This is the Alpha equivalent of UETP. It runs under OpenVMS AXP and DEC OSF/1 oper-
ating systems. See DEC 7000/10000 AXP Technical Bulletin No1 for a brief description of
it’s use. See DEC Verifier and Exerciser Tool User’s Guide, AA-PX73A-TE for more details.
DEC VET is included in the OpenVMS and DEC OSF/1 distributions on the Alpha AXP
Systems Firmware Update CD. The following table lists recent versions:

14.2.5 Corrupt Boot Blocks and WRITEBOOT
During booting 7000/10000 systems get VMB.EXE or APB.EXE from the system disk. The
console bootstrap code finds these files by reading the "Boot Block" (block 0) off the disk.
Two problems can occur here:
1. The files can move if a defragger is run on the system disk.
2. The boot block can fail to get initialised if the system disk is backed up and not restored
properly.
If either occurs the system disk becomes unbootable.
The fix is to run the WRITEBOOT utility which rewrites the Boot Block as shown below.
Example of WRITEBOOT for OpenVMS VAX V6.0:
+ $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:WRITEBOOT
+ Target system device (and bootfile if not VMB.EXE):? $1$DUA0
+ Enter VBN of boot file code (default is 1): 1
+ Enter load address of primary bootstrap in HEX (default is 200): 200
Example of WRITEBOOT for OpenVMS AXP V1.5:
+ $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:WRITEBOOT
+ Update VAX portion of boot block (default is Y) : n
+ Update AXP portion of boot block (default is Y) : y
